In response to Sandy’s submission to the Federal Minister for the Environment on the application made by the Kin Kin Quarry to clear nearly 10h of koala habitat under the Federal Government Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC), they have provided the following:
I acknowledge your concerns regarding the proposed action’s potential impacts on listed threatened species like the Koala, Greater Glider, and Grey-headed Flying Fox, along with your comments on the adequacy of the proponent’s Rehabilitation Management Plan. I also note your comments on community opposition to the project, including complaints of indirect impacts outside the quarry boundaries.
The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) establishes a rigorous and transparent regulatory framework for protecting matters of national environmental significance like listed threatened species. Where an action is likely to have a significant impact on protected matters, assessment and approval is required under the EPBC Act before it can proceed.
Your comments, along with all other public submissions received on the referral, will be considered by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water before a decision is made by a delegate of the minister on whether the proposed action is a controlled action.
Once a decision is made, it will be published on the EPBC Act Portal at:
As soon as a decision has been made by the Federal Minister, we will update the community via Noosa 360 and social media. Meanwhile, as mentioned in our September Noosa 360 update, the Queensland Government is awaiting any such applications that may be sent to them for consideration.
