In Sandy’s recent Noosa MP Community Survey, some residents raised the below matters regarding our major road networks:
- The timeline for the completion of the Bruce Highway
- If any consideration has been given to the widening of the Bruce Highway from Steve Irwin highway to Caloundra turnoff
- If any consideration has been given to duplication of the Sunshine Motorway
In response to our queries to the Queensland Minister for Transport, the below information has been provided:
Timeline for the completion of the Bruce Highway
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) would like to advise that the Bruce Highway upgrade, Caboolture–Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (163) project is a major highway upgrade and is being constructed in two contracts. Contract 1 delivered the section from Caboolture–Bribie Island Road to Pumicestone Road. This section of the highway was opened to six lanes of traffic in August 2023, which marked construction completion for Contract 1. Contract 2 is delivering the section from Pumicestone Road to Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163).
Three lanes of northbound traffic on the Bruce Highway between Pumicestone Road and Steve Irwin Way were opened in late December 2023. The southbound carriageway opened to three lanes in late February 2024.
Construction for Contract 2 started in June 2021 and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Widening of the Bruce Highway from Steve Irwin highway to Caloundra turnoff
TMR has completed early planning for upgrading the Bruce Highway from four to six lanes between Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163) and Caloundra Road, including improvements to interchanges, bridges, batters, safety barriers and provisions for Smart Motorway infrastructure.
Timeframes for further planning, design and construction of the upgrade are not known at this time and will depend on future funding commitments.
Duplication of the Sunshine Motorway
In early 2023, TMR released the preferred option to duplicate the Sunshine Motorway from Pacific Paradise to Coolum from two to four lanes to help improve safety, connectivity and efficiency.
The preferred option includes provision for a grade-separated interchange at Yandina–Coolum Road, a potential future interchange at West Coolum Road and an active transport pathway.
