Chris & Kristy Paterson from Bamboo Projects
Bamboo Projects is a local registered charity founded and led by husband-and-wife team, Kristy and Chris Paterson. Their passion and dedication have given rise to two impactful initiatives: the Back2Work Recycle Programs and the Cleaning up the Waterways Programs.
In particular, the Cleaning up the Waterways Programs have made an incredible difference in our community. With a mission to tackle marine debris, Kristy and Chris, alongside their dedicated team, have been tirelessly removing rubbish from the beautiful Noosa River and Noosa North Shore. What makes this initiative truly special is their commitment to inclusivity, as they employ people with disabilities from our community to actively participate in this vital work.
Over the past year alone, Kristy and Chris, who volunteer their time to run this program, have led efforts that resulted in the removal of over 8 tonnes of marine debris from the Noosa region. Their hard work not only protects our precious waterways but also empowers individuals with disabilities, offering them meaningful employment and a sense of pride in contributing to the environment.
Beyond their environmental efforts, Chris further demonstrates his dedication to our community by volunteering coaching a disability rugby league team running game days out of the Noosa Pirates Club. Her connections with Rotary have also benefited the club and she rallied support to rebuild the boat trailer after it had been smashed by a fallen tree. Her continuing participation in this most technical of sports inspires younger (and older!) rowers, and clearly shows that age is no barrier to the enjoyment of rowing.

Brian O’Connor from QUT
In 2012, Brian became aware that the state government was planning what he considered an inappropriately designed fire station for Pomona and, together with others, sought to enlist the assistance of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) School of Architecture and the Built Environment to design an alternative in consultation with locals. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services relented and adopted many of the ‘tin and timber’ design elements evident in the fire station building in Reserve Street which opened in 2015. It has become a ‘standard’ for fire stations in other small towns across Queensland. Thus began a 10-year program of visitation to Pomona by QUT architectural students to study and ‘re-imagine’ historic buildings and parts of the town as an element of their academic coursework. They interacted with townsfolk about what urban attributes people considered important. Brian has worked with the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils on the wording of the Pomona History Walk plaques and explanatory plaques outside the Ambulance, Fire and Railway stations. On behalf of the Noosa Shire Museum and with the assistance of volunteers, he managed restoration of the Pomona War Memorial Rotunda in 2018. He was a leading player in the ‘Don’t Divide Pomona’ campaign to prevent closure of the cross-town path over the North Coast Line when the railway station was rebuilt. Brian is an active member of the Pomona and District Chamber of Commerce and is its representative on the Pomona Local Area Disaster Management Group. Working with Heather Manders, Coordinator at Pomona and District Community House, Brian has been successful in obtaining grants for a number of projects, including an upgrade of the Iris Mayer Food Hall at the Pomona Showgrounds and a new kitchen for the Pomona Memorial Hall. Beryl has been a member of our local “conference” or branch since 2015. Three years later she became president of this conference. This was at the time of the Covid epidemic during which time Beryl adapted the functioning of the conference to the limitations imposed by Covid whilst still serving the needs of the less fortunate in our community. For the last 4 years, whilst remaining active at the local Noosa level, she has been serving SVDP at a more senior level and in doing so, has contributed enormously to allowing SVDP to serve the poor and deserving in so many ways. She sits on the SVDP State Justice and Peace Committee as well as the State Keeping Queenslander Housed Committee. The KQH program is a vital and much utilised program to stop people being evicted because of difficulty paying rent.

During these 12 years, he gave invaluable assistance to the SVDP role of helping the disadvantaged in the local community.

Marg Banfield from Zonta Club of Noosa Inc.
Marg joined the Zonta Club of Noosa in October 1994. Over the past 30 years, she has worked tirelessly to advance the cause of women and girls, both in the local community and at the global level. Marg began sewing bees to make Zonta Breast Care Cushions in the early 2000s. The cushion provides comfort to women in the post-operative phase of breast surgery, allowing the woman to sit, walk, sleep and rest comfortably. Marg supplies the cushions to the Nambour and Noosa Hospitals for distribution by their Breast Care Nurses. In 2004, the Zonta Club of Noosa hosted a Forum on Domestic Family Violence in conjunction with Noosa Shire Council. Marg was pivotal in providing the initial impetus to convince the Council of the need for such accommodation. The outcome was the establishment of the SHINE Project to build three safe houses providing short-term emergency accommodation for women. Marg is also the first to volunteer for sausage sizzle duties and other fund-raising events. Her service is a shining example of the Zonta ethos of building a better world for women and girls.
