Are improvements needed to be made regarding the ‘Sharing of Space’ – whether it be roads, rivers, pathways or other? Just click on the ‘Sharing of Space’ channel in the Noosa 360 site so we can get your views!

Unsure about why this topic has been raised. Are there concerns related to this issue that this conversation is hoping to address?

Hi Steve. Brett here from Sandy’s office. Thanks for the comment. One of the main reasons Sandy has decided to put this topic out to ‘360’ is that she wants to get community feedback on a whole range of related issues that she is hearing about on a regular basis from constituents in the Noosa electorate that appear to have the common thread of how we all ‘share space’. She believes it to be a vital and important issue for us all to consider which Sandy has highlighted in her introduction. We look forward to hearing if you do have any concerns as well. Regards, Brett

As someone who walks most mornings along many of Noosa’s streets, I find that people ride bicycles on footpaths when the roads are marked with allocated bike lanes. If the riders are children I can accept that, however, it’s mostly adults who are using the footpaths for their rides.

Hi Judith, Lisa here from Sandy’s office. Thanks for your comment. We can understand your concerns and that is part of the reason for this discussion. Why are adults using pathways instead of bike lanes? Are those pathways designated pedestrian only or are they shared pathways? Do they use them due to concerns for their own safety when using bike lanes? Thanks for joining this discussion, we greatly appreciate your input and raising a good point. Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa. I can answer your questions. I personally no hundreds of Adults that use the shared pathways due to concerns for there own safety when using bike lanes. If you ride down Noosa parade to Hastings st you not only have to worrie about the cars going past at 50kms but also have to look out for a parked car opening there door. I believe all foot paths in Noosa are shared (unless stated otherwise)

I would like to see a foot & cycle path run the whole stretch of Beckman Rd, this is a vital link for the whole community in the area from Noosa Parklands straight through to Noosa Bushlands, vital for better public access to the Noosaville SS and shops.

Great idea Victoria! It could run along the electricity line easement similar to the bikepath along Eenie Creek Road. A pedestrian/bike tunnel could be built underneath Noosa Eumundi Road – this would enable safe bike path from Noosa Parklands all the way to Noosa Civic.
With the rising popularity of e-bikes this will provide a healthy pleasant alternative transport route.

Thank you Steve, I have been pushing for this since Glen Elmes day. Sandy has raised the proposal… But I have no idea where it is at now?

Hi Victoria and Steve, thank you for your comments, all very valuable points. Draft plans for Beckmans Road are currently in discussions between Noosa Council and TMR, with initial works proposed to include the much needed roundabout at Cooroy-Noosa Rd intersection, bike needs have been highlighted within the planning process. Noosa Council has a Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy and updating this will form a key component of their Noosa Transport Strategy 2017 – 2027. We suggest you also share your concerns on this subject with Noosa Council or one of your local Councillors. Sandy continues to lobby the Queensland Government for more funding to support local councils in pathway connectivity and has this topic highlighted to raise again in the Budget Estimates process in Parliament next month. Many thanks, Lisa

suggestion – i would like to see cycle/ e-cycle/pedestrian/wheel chair path/lane/space to boreen point all the way on mckinnon drive. there appears to be many bike paths noosa and south of noosa but not in the north, there are many developements north and very little public transport . particularly out ringtail creek and Boreen point way … i would like to ride my bike from ringtail creek into tewantin i am sure other residents would. If you dont have a car its difficult to get anywhere. thanks marie

Hi Marie, Cliona here from Sandy’s office. Thank you for your suggestions, it is appreciated as Sandy has lived along McKinnon Drive for a quarter of a century and she would no doubt be riding a bike as well if there was safe bike pathways!
However as we know, infrastructure needs volume of users/population to support a business case, and the per kilometre cost would be difficult to justify given the small take-up in the populated areas, as well the links from Banks to Tewantin. However in saying that, Sandy is continuing to advocate for State Government funding to assist with pathway construction in our efforts to move to cleaner and more affordable transport options, as well connecting existing pathways, and making levels of Government aware that the current widths of cycle ways on road upgrades are not encouraging the transition. There is also a current project via Open Noosa mapping pathways, which will be of great assistance if everyone submits, which could be invaluable to when Noosa Council does its Master Plan for pathways next year, which could link in to the current State Plan?
Thank you again and we will continue to work in endeavours to improve public transport options wherever possible, and shortly will have an announcement on a pilot to address the issue of transport to the Sunshine University Hospital for our residents. I understand that some cyclists can feel safer on footpaths than on some cycle paths where there are parked cars or obstacles. However cyclists have to keep in mind that they are hosts on the footpath and can in no way speed or hold a gymkhana between pedestrians. They have to safely overtake pedestrians especially older people who can’t necessarily hear them and can sometimes have a scared reaction. The use of a bell or voice call to warn about them approaching is advisable. Children on bicycles have to be manned by their parents at all times.

, Cliona here from Sandy’s office. Many thanks for your feedback which Sandy will take into consideration on this important topic. Regards Cliona

I live at Sunrise Beach and ride an e-bike which I love. I use the footpaths wherever I can, but I go slow when I see pedestrians and always give them a warning and then a thank you when I pass. I have two kids who ride to school at SBSH. My biggest concern is for their safety – it is boom time in our suburb and with each construction job comes a lot of tradies with big vehicles. Cars are parked all along both sides of the street, leaving only a narrow gap for one car to pass through. We have no footpaths. This means my daughters have to ride in the middle of the road. I think there are lots of opportunities to create shared zones with our infrastructure where we don’t have the option to completely separate bikes from cars, but wherever we can it should be completely separate like they do in Europe. It would be great to have a couple of community planning sessions where locals can share ideas but with planners and other staff to explain if and why certain options wouldn’t be viable, or what the roadblocks would be (e.g. cost, land ownership etc.)
