Investors are being enticed to develop three new ecotourism trails in North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones and Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch have today put out the call for interested parties to deliver the Thorsborne Trail (Townsville), Cooloola Great Walk (Sunshine Coast) and the Whitsunday Island Trail.
“We want to partner with the private sector, councils and Traditional Owners to promote our world class national parks and develop new ecotourism,” Ms Jones said.
“Queensland is famous for its natural beauty. That’s why it makes sense for us to develop new ecotourism experiences in places like North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.
“The expressions of interest announced today is the first stage to make sure we develop sustainable tourism experiences that showcase the very best of Queensland.
“The latest tourism data shows that visitors are looking for unique experiences – today’s announcement is about positioning Queensland to capitalise on this growing demand.
“We know eco and adventure tourists stay longer and spend more money when they visit. We’re working hard to develop this sector to create more tourism jobs in Queensland.”
Ms Enoch said ecotourism development has the potential to showcase the state’s natural and cultural values, while at the same time delivering a sustainable experience for visitors and locals.
“Importantly, the trails will also offer on-going employment and economic benefits for these regional communities, and Traditional Owners,” Ms Enoch said.
“Our expectation from those interested in submitting an EOI is simple – we want you to foster a conservation culture with these world-class opportunities, and at the same time create local jobs.
“National and international tourism operators should be excited by the opportunity to showcase our treasured natural assets.
“We certainly are, and look forward to reviewing the creative proposals which will allow some of our most beautiful natural assets to be seen in an entirely fresh light.”
