After relentless advocacy over many years, starting when I was a Councillor and this bridge was part of the Gympie Electorate, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has announced that construction for this new bridge, 3kms north of Pomona, is expected to start late October 2022, weather and construction scheduling permitting!
Although we have previously provided updates on the details, a quick recap:
- The existing narrow timber bridge will be replaced with a sturdier, two-lane concrete bridge.
- The new bridge will have a significantly wider bridge deck, allowing for two traffic lanes and wider shoulders. It will also withstand more significant flood events, reducing the frequency and duration of closures in comparison to the existing timber bridge.
- The new bridge and road sections will be constructed offline to the west of the existing bridge. This means road users will continue to use the existing road and bridge during construction. Construction is expected to take approximately 18months to complete, weather and conditions permitting.
- Timber from the existing bridge will be reused to repair existing timber bridges within TMR’s network.
