During the Health, Environment and Innovation Committee Estimates Hearing, I welcomed confirmation that additional Queensland Ambulance Service staff and resources have been allocated to the northern Sunshine Coast, including Noosa, to strengthen emergency response capability and help reduce Triple Zero call delays.

During the hearing, I asked Queensland Ambulance Service Commissioner Craig Emery what measures were being implemented to address delays experienced by Noosa residents when calling Triple Zero.

In response, Commissioner Emery confirmed that additional staffing had been provided to both the North Coast Regional Communications Centre and the Tewantin Ambulance Station.

“Specifically for Noosa we are putting additional staff into the Sunshine Coast area. We’ve put nine staff into the North Coast Regional Communications Centre…seven additional staff in Tewantin and two clinical critical care paramedics into the north Sunshine Coast area,” Commissioner Emery said.

“Overall, for the Sunshine Coast Wide Bay region we have put 27 additional staff in this year.”

The Commissioner also confirmed that 15 replacement ambulance vehicles and four additional new vehicles would be deployed across the Sunshine Coast Wide Bay region.

This announcement is a positive step towards addressing concerns raised by residents regarding ambulance demand and response times, and follows advocacy that has spanned eight years.

“Additional frontline staff and resources are very welcome given the issues experienced over the years of delays due to ambulances being redirected to Sunshine Coast University Hospital when the Noosa Hospital Emergency Department is at capacity,” I said.

“We appreciate this investment in additional paramedics, communications staff and emergency response capability, and thank the government for responding, and all of our frontline health staff who work so hard for our community.”

I will continue advocating for the resources needed to ensure services keep pace with the needs of the Noosa electorate and look forward to meeting with Acting Sunshine Coast District Director Hayley Saleborne this week to discuss the impact these additional resources will have on timely emergency healthcare.
