Historically Alexandria Bay has been used unofficially as a clothing optional beach for many years, with locals simply avoiding it in past if it caused offence as it is a fairly isolated location and was not as well known amongst visitors.
As Noosa National Park has grown in popularity, particularly amongst those using the trail networks for exercise, this location has lost some of the isolation of the past and use has increased. With the Coastal Track passing by Alexandria Bay now being utilised by many including families, complaints about indiscrete nudity and reported lewd acts have increased.
We are aware over the years of some who wish to see this beach become a legal clothing optional beach as there are no legalised clothing free, clothing optional, or nudist beaches in Queensland, as well Tasmania. Currently, it is an offence to be on a public beach in these two states without any clothing, with two possible charges in Queensland of ‘Wilful Exposure’ or ‘Public Nuisance’.
We have been advised that legalised clothing optional beaches in other states have attracted predators and increased risk at these locations, therefore it would need significant advocacy across Queensland for the Government to consider changing legislation for any beaches, including Alexandria Bay.
For those wishing to advocate for such a change, please consider emailing the following Ministers below with a cc to our office: noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au
Minister for Police Hon Mark Ryan, via police@ministerial.qld.gov.au
Minister for Local Government, Hon Steven Miles, via deputy.premier@ministerial.qld.gov.au (In other states it is legalised under a local government act)
