BRUCE HIGHWAY OFF-RAMP LIGHTING UPDATE AUGUST 2026

Further to our earlier update regarding copper theft leading to a lack of off-ramp lighting in many locations along the Bruce Highway and other major roads, we have received further response from the minister to our ongoing advocacy as below in italics:

At the Minister’s request, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has investigated the streetlighting outages at the Bruce Highway interchanges near the Noosa Electorate and identified the outage is a result of cable theft and vandalism, which remain ongoing challenges affecting assets across Queensland.

The Minister is aware of the safety impacts caused by theft and through TMR is working to restore all affected streetlighting as a priority.

The Crisafulli Government has allocated dedicated funding to reinstate lighting infrastructure affected by widespread copper theft and clear the backlog of unresolved incidents during the time of the former Labor Government. The funding is included in the 2026 State Budget from this financial year.

Due to the high volume of theft incidents, TMR assesses the safety of affected sites and prioritises repair works using a risk-based approach, with consideration given to factors such as traffic conditions, road layout, crash history, and the suitability of temporary treatments.

To mitigate the risk of future theft, TMR is also deploying prevention measures, including the use of alternative materials, enhanced assets protection, and targeted security treatments at high-risk locations.

To prevent future theft at this location, TMR’s scope of works will include hardened electrical pit security. In addition, sites will continue to be monitored with system alarms and CCTV where possible.

TMR and QPS and working together to deter cable theft.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity around traffic signals and streetlighting to QPS via its website, calling 131 444, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

To date, we do not have an expected timeframe for the lights to be operational again, however have been assured that they are working on these issues throughout Queensland currently.

We will continue to update as new information becomes available.
