Further to previous updates regarding rising insurance premiums and concerns about impacts from the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan, in response to resident concerns regarding a national approach to coastal erosion, we have received the following further explanation of Coastal Hazards Management in Australia from the Queensland Minister for Environment in italics.
There is a national approach to some aspects of coastal erosion, such as coastal hazard management. For example, states and territories administer the legislative framework for managing the coastal zone and the Australian Government provides enabling support including science, data, funding, policy guidance and coordination. This arrangement reflects the principles of integrated coastal zone management and addresses risks that operate at regional and national scales.
Recent examples include the Intergovernmental Coastal Hazards Working Group report ‘Towards a National Collaborative Approach to Managing Coastal Hazards in Australia’ and the Australian Government’s Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program under which the Queensland Government is delivering 10 projects with $8.4 million funding over three years. One of the projects under the Program is the development of a regional coastal process model for the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, to help improve understanding of coastal hazard impacts on beaches and the effect of different management options to improve resilience.
The Commonwealth Government provides more information regarding coastal erosion and climate change at www.acs.gov.au/pages/hazards-coastal-erosion and also a report on sea level rise at www.dcceew.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/sea-level-rise-workshop-report.pdf
