In March I wrote to Minister Ryan, Minister Farmer and Minister D’Ath with 13 recommendations developed in collaboration with Noosa electorate victims and frontliners to reduce the trauma of domestic violence on victims, their families and first responders. The following is a summary of these recommendations:
- The need for mandatory lethal risk assessments by DV specialists
- Increased dedicated domestic violence courts
- A focus on perpetrator patterns of behaviour when issuing domestic violence orders
Further, I have requested funding in the 2020/21 financial year for:
- increased training for first responders
- the implementation of an independent review body for police actions
- increased emergency accommodation for victims and perpetrators
- additional funding for behaviour change programs for male and female perpetrators
In addition, I have requested of the Department for Child Safety, Youth and Women that representatives from Noosa be included in the 2020 DV Summit which due to COVID-19 had been moved to a series of online meetings. I am awaiting the list of attendees for these mini summits and will update as soon as further information is received.
