With many residents from outside the Noosa State Electorate boundaries raising this with our office, we have complied the below information to assist individuals and communities who wish to advocate for changes in future redistributions.
Sandy and other MPs have no say in state electorate boundaries and rightly so with the issues seen in other jurisdictions where ‘gerrymandering‘ is prevalent.
To summarise our previous Noosa 360 update on this, the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ), an independent body, determine Queensland’s electoral boundaries and provides information about the process and also the records of previous redistributions. As they have not yet announced an upcoming redistribution, the Queensland Redistribution Commission has not been formed in readiness. It would make logical sense if they were to work on redistributions prior to the next election in October 2024, however there is no guarantee of that, and nothing yet announced.
A reminder, state electorates boundaries are different to local government areas (LGA’s) and federal electorates with residents having a different elected representative/s at each of these levels. For more information on this, please read our Noosa 360 at www.sandybolton.com/council-state-federal-the-3-levels-of-australian-government-july-2023
Any questions on the redistribution process can to be directed to the ECQ direct via ECQ@ECQ.qld.gov.au.
