In response to resident concerns regarding the lack of speed cameras on Teewah Beach, Sandy asked a Question on Notice (QON) to the Queensland Minister for Police. Their full response is below and can be viewed in the official parliamentary record at https://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/tableOffice/questionsAnswers/2024/186-2024.pdf.

Sandy’s QON

With reference to the continuing dangerous driving along Teewah Beach— Will the Minister advise on the use of the Teewah Beach speed camera site, (a) specifically which dates there has been a speed camera in use there over the last three years and (b) what method is used to determine future dates?

The Minister’s response

I am advised by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) that a speed camera has been deployed to Teewah Beach on the following dates within the last three years:

  • 3 May 2021
  • 11 June 2022
  • 21 August 2021
  • 16 March 2024
  • 17 March 2024

One other deployment was scheduled for 15 May 2022 but was aborted due to the tide being unsuitable.

The Member should note that the data provided by QPS does not include any other speed camera placements which may have been undertaken by other Queensland Government agencies. As such, the Member may wish to direct this portion of the question to the relevant Minister/s.

I am further advised that the Sunshine Coast Police District continues to focus upon road safety education and enforcement for high-risk areas, which includes Teewah Beach. The QPS continuously reviews demand for resourcing to the Cooloola Coast in accordance with an intelligence-led policing approach where resources committed match demand. The QPS will continue to deploy resources to the Cooloola Coast during special events, peak holiday periods and in response to intelligence findings indicative of deployment needs.

Following this, we have also requested information on what other Queensland Government agencies use speech camera placements so we can obtain data from them as well.

Sandy will continue to advocate for the release of the Sustainable Visitor Capacity Management study and the recommendations emanating from.
